French Terror Attacks
How these terror attacks are provoked by secularism.
The recent terrorist attacks have shocked the world. The attack was conducted because a school teacher showed cartoons of Prophet Mohammed in an education session of freedom of expression and secularism. Secularism aims to say that the state and religion are two very different things and can’t have a correlation but negative. Many countries condemned this terrorist and radical attack on an innocent man and secularism as a whole.
In France, secularism means that everything which relates to religion – including clothing, is banned and officials who are seen violating this code and participating in religious activities, will be punished by the french code of secularism. Many Islamic countries have said that the use of the cartoons published by the satirical magazine – Charlie Hebdo is offensive. They believe that it offends the sentiments of people who practice Islam and also goes against the ethical conduct of religion. So you see, France takes secularism seriously. They believe that anything which relates to religion has to be separate from the nation’s identity as a whole. What we all can agree on is that whatever happens, violence isn’t the way to go. Hence, the French president said that those cartoons will be posted on government buildings in a way to show peace and freedom of expression.
The case of Charlie Hebdo.
Whatever happened is wrong. The thing is, I need to show you both sides of the story and present logical arguments to back those claims up.
Argument 1: Since the 2015 terror attacks in France, Charlie Hebdo is regularly making cartoons attacking Islam as a whole. It isn’t what it was – It doesn’t attack everyone, it targets Islam. The magazine targets Islamic beliefs explicitly and doesn’t make fun of everyone anymore, or has a reduced list.
Argument 2: France should put limits on secularism and free speech.
● Many people say that this kind of free speech and secularism is radical and is taken too
seriously. Officials from mainly Islamic countries state that this secularism is hurting
religious sentiments and goes agaisnt the law of Islam.
● This form of secularism is too radical and showing cartoons of anyone, threatens the
modesty of the person.
Countering the claims above #1:
● Islam among other religions needs to adapt french culture and modern times. It’s French
soil, so there is french legislation which supports secularism and you must follow.
● Any religion should be forbidden to express itself publicly in a bid to make peace.
Burkini’s were banned in a bid to prevent a patriachal and oppresive culture.
Countering the claims above #2:
● Each religion has a rule in which you need to treat others the way you would like to be
treated, so why kill for a thing like this?
A not so fun fact:
For blasphemy, countries like Saudi Arabia and Pakistan have a death penalty. In India, blasphemy will land you in jail for 4 years or you will face a huge fine.
In what aspects is French secularism radical?
The practice of Blasphemy has been practiced in France since centuries. French legislation has a small limit to freedom of speech and expression and you can almost believe that you are a free person. In France, as stated above, politicians are barred from having any religious affilliations, though they may practice their own religion – they can’t tell anyone which religion they are from and go to any religiously motivated places in a bid to get votes or a politically correlated matter.
In India most of the prime political figures have had religious affiliations.
Should Blasphemy exist?
I feel like blasphemy is a necessary part of any religion. It is needed in order to progress as a whole in society, but to some extent, there should be a limit on what you do when you talk profanely of any religion. The limit should be decided by the people, but killing someone in a country where Blasphemy is legal, is not the way to go and the person who conducted the attack must be dealt with on a national level.
France is facing many attacks and it is important for the country to start educating people more and more and avoid letting them get motivated to join forces with terrorist organisations.
