I have personally become a victim of this. Attention is a part of our active consciousness. It makes a human being up and shapes as to how they think and interact with people around them or companies around them.
I personally spend a lot of time on devices because of online school or just because I am stuck at home. So, I will come out clean. I consume a lot of information every day. I go through it for my blog, general knowledge, entertainment and school. So, like many things which are bad for you when consuming constantly- information is one of those things. So, I was browsing through the web one rainy evening and saw this word come up. "Information Overdose", is something which we don't encounter daily. This is because the companies which feed you that dopamine hit, are not talking about it. They feed on your attention.
Now that you know what information overdose is, reflect on your daily life. Ask these questions to yourself.
Which information source do you use the most? Examples of information giving services are Instagram, Twitter, and emails.
Reflect on how you get there to the source. For example, someone tags you in a post or direct messages.
What time do you sleep? Do you sleep later than you should?
Do you feel happier after picking that phone up?
The reason why you feel happy after you consume that information is that you get instant gratification because of the dopamine hit which you get. Reflect on how these apps compete to get your attention.
So the information overdose is the act of consuming too much information. It impacts you in small aspects of life but people have also died from this. Don't believe me? Read this
This effects your ability to focus, think, make decisions, and contributes to insomnia.
Read the link in the word 'insomnia' to find out a way to sleep.
To fight this, I brainstormed some things to help combat information overdose and tested them out myself.
The first way- a small one really, is that shut all notifications from youtube and Instagram down. These apps send a lot of notifications and those notifications are curated in such a way that you need to open the app to know what happened.
Next, the obvious, set time limits. If you have a one plus or an iPhone go to setting> apps> *insert your app> time limit. If you have any doubts about this, send them through the chat.
Another way is to let people make decisions like ordering food for you. This reduces stress for you and will make it easier for the person serving you too!
Lastly, limit your screen time or time speaking to people. The best way to process things is to not think about them. So go on- meditate. Silently.
I am sorry for not posting as Summative season is on. Also, this blog was extremely rushed and I am sorry for that. Thank you for understanding. Have a nice day.
